"…it happens that no improvements on science or literature, no reformation in religion or morals, nor any rectification of mistaken measures in government, can be made without opposition from numbers, who, flattering themselves that their own intentions are pure, (however sinister soever they may be in fact) will reproach impure designs to others, or, fearing a detriment to their interest or a mortification to their passions from the innovation, will even think it lawful directly and knowingly to falsify the motives and characters of the innocent." -- John Adams

(sure sounds like today's Liberals, doesn't it?)

How many wells does an oil company have to drill before it finds enough oil to make it profitable to produce?  I don't know what the answer is in 2008, but I know exactly what the answer was about 10 years ago when I invested several thousand dollars in my one and only investment in a drilling venture, which was near Abilene, Texas.  It was a dry hole.  Anyway, the year to year average for drilling an economically successful well, on a year to year basis, was 1-in-9 to 1-in-11.  Improvements in technology has probably improved those odds, but the point is that drilling for oil is anything but a certainty and that, on the average you have to drill a lot of holes before you get a good one.  A lot of the time it isn't the big oil companies who do the drilling.  It is small time wildcatters who get together the investors and take the risk.  If successful they usually sell out to the big companies in return for a percentage of the future profits.  Still, drilling for oil is a high risk game, and you lose more often than you win.
