"The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the states, are reserved to the states respectively, or to the people" -- Constitution of the United States, Amendment 10, the Bill of Rights, 1787
(Maybe we should require candidates for national office take an examination on what our Constitution says)

"Gentlemen indulge too many unreasonable apprehensions of danger to the State governments; they seem to suppose that the moment you put men into a national council, they become corrupt and tyrannical and lose all their affection for their fellow citizens. But can we imagine that the Senators will ever be so insensible of their own advantage as to sacrifice the genuine interest of their constituents? The State governments are essentially necessary to the form and spirit of the general system. As long, therefore, as Congress has a full conviction of this necessity, they must even upon principles purely national, have as firm an attachment to the one as to the other. This conviction can never leave them, unless they become madmen. While the Constitution continues to be read and its principle known the States must by every rational man be considered as essential, component parts of the Union; and therefore the idea of sacrificing the former to the latter is wholly inadmissible." -- Alexander Hamilton (1755-1804),  Speech to the New York Constitutional Convention, June 17, 1788
(When is the last time you heard of our national Senators and Representatives deferring to their home states?)

The State governments possess inherent advantages, which will ever give them an influence and ascendancy over the National Government, and will forever preclude the possibility of federal encroachments. That their liberties, indeed, can be subverted by the federal head, is repugnant to every rule of political calculation. -- Alexander Hamilton, speech to the New York Ratifying Convention, June 17, 1788
(Here, now, is a statement by one of our Founders which shows that their intent, in designing the Constitution as they did, was to make the federal government subservient to the states)

COMMENTARY - I included more Founders quotations than usual because yesterday's passing of another giant spending bill shows that most of our national politicians are ignoring the wishes of their constituants, who were about 75-85% against it.  Is not the first duty of our elected officials to represent the wishes of their constituants? If they had followed the dictates of the Constitution that would not have happened.  The danger in all this is that ignoring what the Constitution says makes it worth little more than a scrap of old paper.  The Constitution is where our rights and protection are enumerated.  What value our rights if the Constitution is ignored?  What protections do we have if the Constitution is ignored?  We must demand adherence to the Constitution's provisions.  Our republic cannot much longer exist as a beacon of freedom if we don't.

Are you unhappy with the way many things are going in the USA?  If you are then let your elected representatives hear from you.  Our nation is a "representative republic."  In other words a nation where our legislators are supposed to represent your wishes, but, if you don't let them hear from you how are they supposed to know what things concern you?  Generally liberals are more group oriented than are conservatives, and tend to be more activist in nature. That's why things in our country have been becoming more and more liberal in nature, even though conservatives outnumber the liberals.  Remember, our nation only works as our founders designed it to work if the citizens participate in its operation.
